Susan McGalla Offers An Interesting Way To Look At Career Accomplishments

Susan McGalla has given a lot of advice to business executives in the Pittsburgh area on how to better promote their brands, and the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers have also seen how her strategic thinking has helped sales in their fan pro shop. But she also was once interviewed during her time at American Eagle Outfitters in which she was asked about what her status as company president meant to her and whether it should be seen as empowering for women. But McGalla said this accomplishment is not something she considers to have done as a woman, but just a person. She said she believes that the same kind of hard work that men do should be expected of women and that as she grew up she was taught that very principle. McGalla has not only worked hard in her corporate life; she’s also balanced it with being a wife and mother.

Susan McGalla’s sports background coming from a small town where her father was the high school football coach may have influenced her decision later on to join the Steelers’ organization. But she started out at the Joseph Horne Company and then joined American Eagle as its regional merchandising officer. She was promoted in a few years to corporate level chief merchandising officer, and as head of this division she started expanding American Eagle lines into its female Aerie company and its children’s brand, 77kids. She also served as president of the company from 2007 to 2009 and also made a story in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette when American Eagle moved its headquarters across town.

Susan McGalla moved from American Eagle into the real estate profession for a couple years as a member of HFF, Inc. Around the same time she started at the Pittsburgh Steelers, she also founded P3 Executive Consulting and served for a time at the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. From time to time she also interacts with business students as an advisor to her alma mater Mount Union College, and she also has supported the Magee-Womens Hospital Research Institute and Foundation.
